| To record its employees' clocking attendance, Enemalta
Corporation until recently relied on a manual system
throughout its various locations. All this has changed
in the last months as its over 2,000 employees have
been clocking on a new system. Taking advantage of
biometric technology, Enemalta Corporation has replaced
their old punch clocks with hand recognition readers.
These units positively identify employees by recording
their hand in a 3 dimensional image, which is a unique
image for each individual.
Advanced Industrial Systems Ltd. of Fgura, have
been entrusted with this project. Having brought
the technology to the island some 8 years ago,
AIS Ltd. has carried out numerous similar projects
in Malta, although the Enemalta Corporation installation
is the largest of its kind to date.
Time & Attendance biometric terminals
The installation at Enemalta Corporation consists
of 30 hand reading units spread across Malta
and Gozo and linked to a central computer via
telephone lines. The information collected
is fed to the Time and Attendance Software
Package which processes the employees' attendance
for the 20 locations. As employees will be
required to use their own hand to verify attendance,
operating costs are significantly reduced as
there are no punch cards or other consumable
stationaries.
This on-line data enables the Corporation to
be constantly updated with its employee movements
within the organization. It also has the advantage
that data is managed centrally, with each location
updating the central system with information
for leave, sick leave and other absenteeism as
they arise..
As the Time and Attendance data is also directly
linked to the Payroll and Human Resources Systems,
data is being managed centrally and efficiently
Such an approach makes the system extremely user
friendly with minimal need for system administrators.
A 'Who's Not In' report enables administrators
to pin point staff shortages at particular locations
while attendance, absenteeism, and several reports
are available for human resources and payroll.
Since this electronic system does away with
punch cards and as data is digitized, no time
is lost to transfer attendance data from the
punch clocks into a computer. This Hand Recognition
Technology also eliminates the loss of personnel
time due to the possibility of collective clocking,
which is always a major concern in large organizations.
It is believed that the project apart from reducing
and simplifying the handling of the daily Time
and Attendance information, has provided the
organization with considerable savings. |
